With a small variety of weapons, Gears of War has eleven different weapons. As a COG soldier, you start off with a Lancer (assault rifle), shotgun, grenade, and a pistol. The humans developed the Hammer of Dawn, Lancer, Gnasher (shotgun), the Longshot rifle (sniper), Snub pistol, and the grenade. The Locust Horde created the Hammerburst, Torque Bow, and the Boomshot.
In the sequel Gears of War 2, there are special executions that can be performed on a downed enemy, they are listed below.
 Human Weapons
Hammer of Dawn
By far the strongest weapon in the game, the Hammer of Dawn is more of a tracking device that can guide a powerful beam from a satellite in space. It takes about 3-4 seconds for the Hammer to completely charge and fire. Since it works in conjunction with a satellite, the Hammer of Dawn can only be used outside in multiplayer matches, and during the campaign the player cannot use it unless Anya has notified them whether the satellites are online or not. If hit directly by the Hammer, an enemy is instantly killed. Special Execution:N/A
Lancer Assualt Rifle
The fully automatic Coalition multi-purpose assault rifle. This gun is intended for combat ranging from medium to short distances; it holds 60 rounds in its magazine and a player can hold up to 660 rounds. The chainsaw bayonet can be activated by holding 'B'. An enemy who is within a certain proximity of a player with the chainsaw revved will be instantly caught in the chainsaw animation, in which case is unavoidable death. However, if a player with the chainsaw revved is shot, he/she will be temporarily stunned, leaving them vulnerable to the enemy. In addition, there is a short waiting period before the player can rev up the chainsaw again. Most fan's love this weapon and use it mostly just for the chainsaw. In Gears of War 2, if two players rev the chainsaw at the same time, an animation known as a "Chainsaw Duel" will be engaged, with both players having to rapidly tap B. The one who does it better wins. Special Execution: Quickly tapping 'B' on a downed enemy will bump the end of the Lancer on the enemies skull.
The Gnasher is a lethal short to mid-range weapon designed to take opponents down in occasionally one shot depending greatly on the aiming and distance of the shot. The optimum distance for using this weapon is about 3 meters or less, where it is possible to kill an enemy with a single shot. By using the game's 'Active Reload' system, the Gnasher becomes even more powerful with a 1.5x power increase to its shells. Special Execution:Holds shotgun like a baseball bat and swings it in a similar fashion as you swing a golf club.
The Longshot is known as the premier long-range weapon. Designated for mid to long-range combat, the sniper is a one-hit kill when it hits the head of an enemy, consequently (and quite gruesomely) removing their head (also known as a "headshot"). The sniper can also be a one-hit down if fired after an active reload. It takes two non-active shots within no more than 3 seconds to down an enemy. The sniper is not as useful in close-range combat unless combined with a melee or an active reload, also known as a two-piece. Special Execution:The rifle is held by the barrel and the stock is brought onto the enemy like a sledgehammer.
An underrated weapon granted to players automatically in Multiplayer, the snub pistol is able to repeatedly fire shots in succession as quickly as the wielder can pull the trigger. If the player is able to hit an enemy seven to nine times in the head, they will be rewarded with a "headshot", instantly killing the opponent. With an active reload, only five to seven shots to the head are required. The pistol is extremely effective, although difficult to use, when firing from the hip. It is often used in combination with a melee. Special Execution:N/A
Frag and Smoke Grenades
The player has the ability to use two different types of grenades in Gears of War, they are thrown by either holding the left trigger which brings up a blue or red colored arc (depending on if your are playing as a COG or Locust) which shows the trajectory of the grenade for a more accurate throw or by simply throwing it with right trigger, similar to a blind fire. The first is the frag grenade which, if stepped on by an opponent, is an instant death. If a "frag" explodes near an enemy, they will become temporarily stunned, giving the player who tossed it a strong advantage. It is also possible to melee with a frag grenade, causing it to tag onto an enemy and detonate shortly after, which is an inevitable death for the enemy. However, if the "tagger" is close enough to the enemy tagged with the frag, the explosion will kill both of them. Special Exection:N/A
Smoke grenades in Gears of War are very similar to regular smoke grenades. They can also be "stuck" to an enemy, but with little to no effect other than them being initially stunned after the melee. Smokes will blind an opponent's view in a certain area, and usually last about 10-15 seconds. Smoke grenades only appear in Multiplayer mode.
Short to mid-range flame thrower. active will concentrate the flame causing it to shoot further and do damage quicker. with the recent update it now slows people down while charging at you with chainsaws. very useful when fighting people behind cover and boom-shields.
 Locust Weapons
The Hammerburst is the Locust equivalent to the Lancer. It does not have a chainsaw equipped with it, but it is useful in melee combinations, where one melee and a pull of the trigger can down the enemy. It is useful at any range, and is more powerful than the Lancer. Three clips is usually enough to down an enemy however, with an active reload, the Hammerburst only requires two clips. The hammerburst is not to be confused with the gears of war 1 locust weapon of choice, the machine gun. although having a similar look they are not the same weapon.
The Machine gun is the locust weapon of choice in gears of war one. It has a 60 bullet clip and fires short 6 shot bursts. The weapon is easily and often confused to be the hammerburst which is the gun locust have replaced this old gun with, (just as C.O.G.s replaced their old lancer).
The Torque Bow is one of the trickiest but most useful weapons in the game. It is almost as effective as the Longshot for sniping. The Torque Bow uses exploding arrows that can tag on to the target and detonate itself upon contact. In order to tag the intended target with the arrow, the user must hold the trigger to charge the bow for at least 3 seconds before releasing it to fire. Moreover, the Torque Bow will fire itself if the trigger is held for a certain period of time. The longer the bow is charged, the faster the arrow will travel, making it one of the most difficult weapons to evade. However, if the bow is fired before charging it for 3 seconds, the arrow will not be able to tag on to the target (since it won't be traveling fast enough to be able to pierce and tag onto the target) and simply travel like a rocket in an arc. When aiming with the Torque Bow, a trajectory beam appears on-screen that will straighten itself when the bow is charged. The straighter the beam becomes, the more accurate the shot is. An enemy that has been shot with a Torque Bow charged for 3 seconds or more will die instantly when the arrow detonates. Getting an active reload with the bow will allow the user to charge it up in 2/3 of the time it would normally take for the bow to propel an arrow fast enough to stick onto an enemy. In Gears of War 2 the Torque Bow is expected to be even more useful, since it will be able to instantly blow up destructible cover, giving the player a prime advantage in places where cover is limited when wielding this weapon. Special Execution:The enemy's head is mounted on the inside of the bow, then kicked, resulting in decapitation.
One of the most devastating weapons in the game, the Boomshot is basically a rocket launcher. When a rocket makes contact with the target, it causes an initial explosion followed by a secondary one, which resembles a "splash" effect. Even if a player manages to avoid the initial explosion, the secondary one may still prove to be fatal. A Boomshot fired after an active reload will increase its range of damage. If an enemy is directly hit with a rocket or within a range of about 5 feet (1.5 meters) of where the rocket hits, it is an instant kill. The Boomshot is extremely effective at all ranges, however, the player has to calculate a proper trajectory for the shot to arc for it to hit the opponent. Also, if the boomshot is fired by the player at a very close range, the Boomshot may also kill them along with the enemy. Perfect Active Reload yields a few more explosions after initial detonation. Special Execution:N/A
The Boltok pistol has a smaller clip than the Snub pistol, but it is also more powerful. However, it fires much slower than the Snub pistol. An active reload of the weapon will increase its damage. The pistol is overall more difficult to use than the Snub (due to its powerful recoil when fired), but can kill enemies much faster when fired at enemies' heads. In Gears of War 2, a Perfect Active Reload gives the gun more power and temporarily lifts it's curse of slow power, making the gun fire twice as fast. Special Execution:The gun is held by the barrel then the handle is whipped across the enemy's head.
The Gorgon Pistol is the third type of Pistol in Gears Of War and is making an exclusive debut in Gears Of War 2. This quick firing gun can eject two bullets simultaneously which is enabled by its dual clip making it a powerful weapon and lethal at close range. It has one drawback that once it needs reloading both barrels must be reloaded. It is a weapon favored by the Locust Kantus. Being a single handed weapon like the Boltok Pistol or the Snub Pistol, The newest Handgun can be wielded with the Shield to protect the user and offer cover at varied intervals. The Pistol is also the only gun which can be used when you have picked up an enemy/flag into the meat shield position. Being possibly the most powerful Pistol, the Gorgun Handgun proves very effective when doing this. When using this gun, aim at an opponents head and unload all six shots into it. This usually results in a down. Special Execution:N/A.
The Mulcher is a chaingun used by the Locust Grinders. This gun, if used correctly, can turn your enemies into, well, mulch. This gun must be cooled after some use, which can be done by pressing and holding the right bumper. Max ammo is 500 shots. This weapon cannot be stocked, unfortunately, and carrying it hampers your movement. Kill 30 enemies with this weapon and you earn the Organ Grinder achievement.
The Mortar is a very powerful weapon. A well-placed shot can kill a Reaver on Insane difficulty instantly, raining fiery death upon it. This weapon can instantly turn the tide of the battle as it can reduce a battalion of enemies to shreds within seconds. This weapon, however, is not easy to aim, as the marker used to aim it can be very inaccurate at times. Nevertheless, this weapon is an instant kill regardless, so hear the sound it emits when it shoots and RUN. Like the Mulcher, this gun cannot be stocked and carrying it hampers your movement. Kill 30(?) enemies with this weapon and you earn the "Shock And Awe" achievement.
