Maria Santiago is the wife of COG soldier Dominic Santiago. She went missing shortly after Emergence Day, when their children were killed during a Locust attack. Dom has her name tattooed on his right arm, and continues to search for her even as the war wages on.

Gears of War 2 begins with Marcus and Dom being sent to a hospital after a report from Anya suggests she might be there. The two soldiers find out after battling a Locust attack that a woman matching Maria's description had been released from the hosptial days earlier. Later on while scouring the underground, Dom is told by one of the stranded that Maria was seen with another group that had been captured. With the help of Marcus and Jack, Dom is able to find Maria in one of the Locust mercenary camps. She had been badly tortured, with her appearance showing great age and wear, and she showed no signs of normal brain function and appeared almost lifeless. After some final words to his wife, Dom releases his wife from her struggle and shoots her.
